Fork in the Road Wines

South Australia | McLaren Vale

Our Review

Joan Rowley purchased an 8ha allotment in the heart of McLaren Vale, where she built a new family home for herself and her three children. Ben Paxton (Paxton Wines) was working at Hardys at the time, and arranged a 10-year grape supply contract if she were to plant vines on the property. When the contract came to an end in 2007, Joan recruited local winemaker Phil Christiensen to make the wines. Joan had established the gardens and grounds at the Old Oval Estate for a weddings/functions business, with sales of the Fork in the Road wines. Daughter Patrisse Caddle (with a bed & breakfast in McLaren Vale) assists with marketing and strategy. Son Cameron has purchased a vineyard in Whiting's Road to contribute to the supply of grapes, and yet another daughter, Amanda, works in the cellar door on weekends, and does the bookkeeping. Grandchildren are all already in Joan's sights to work at the cellar door while they undertake their university studies. -JAMES HALLIDAY

Fork in the Road Wines produce premium, single vineyard Shiraz and Cabernet from our own vineyards. Recently we were ranked in the top three Shiraz in the world in a European wine challenge. We have won several gold awards since and have Halliday points in the 90’s plus ratings ranging 93-95 points from Sam Kim’s Wine Orbit. We are three generations working together to nurture grapes from vineyard to bottle. My mother grows the Shiraz, my brother grows the Cabernet and the children and I work run the cellar door. The family have grown grapes and made wine for nearly 20 years. We have a cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale and are gaining quite a following and are one of the top five ‘things to do’ in McLaren Vale on TripAdvisor. Our wines are suited to sophisticated consumers looking for a smooth, well-rounded, easy drinking, rich and full flavoured wine to share with their friends.

Our flagship wine is our Shiraz, which is grown on the grounds of Old Oval Estate.

Cellar Door

The cellar door with its rustic charm is available for tasting bookings. It features a wine list of Fork in the Road Wines. The wine label is the creation of Joan herself and is appropriately named with regard to their location, which is where Sand Road deviates from the main McLaren Vale Road, thereby creating a fork. With a line up of delicious wines produced from fruit grown from their family's own vineyards, it has been a local favourite since its first vintage in 2000 and its first bottling in 2007. Delicious regional platters available including some amazing local produce as some house-made relish. Tastings available Friday - Sunday 11am until 5pm. Bus groups by appointment only. Fork in the Road Wines, it’s a special place of rolling lawns, picturesque views and romantic elegance for the whole family. Come and see for yourself.
