Our Review

Occasionally, a winemaker comes along who has the gift of presence and crafts compelling wines. Josh Cooper is one. Astonishing, as he’s only in his mid-30s. Sure, it’s destiny – his parents are Allan and Nellie Cooper of Cobaw Ridge fame, but Josh is forging his unique path. Aside from gentle, thoughtful winemaking, his love of the Macedon Ranges and his respect for vinous history (drinking many old vintages of Balgownie Estate and Virgin Hills with his father) have inspired some of his wines, which are sourced from old vineyards such as Balgownie Estate. How serendipitous. In ’21, he bought 8ha in the Macedon Ranges, high-density plantings of chardonnay with some pinot noir will be completed in ’24. Though he won’t be giving up the old established sites. It’s all complementary and full of synergy. Joshua Cooper is the Halliday Wine Companion 2024 Best New Winery. -JANE FAULKNER
