Just over three hours from Sydney, Mudgee is the ultimate weekend destination. With boutique cellar doors, breweries, food festivals and activities for the whole family to enjoy, it's a must-visit. If you're looking for a taste of the region, here are 12 of the best Mudgee wines to try.

Best Mudgee Wines

The Mudgee wine region is a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Sydney, and if you're looking for the best Mudgee wines, you needn't look any further. The drive will take you via the Blue Mountains and into the picturesque countryside.

Mudgee (AKA red wine country) produces standout cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and merlot, but you'll also find beautiful expressions of chardonnay, riesling, semillon, a few Italian varietals, and rosé wines made from the likes of shiraz and sangiovese.

Heading to the region? Mudgee is a mecca for food, with a vibrant culinary scene and foodie events like Mudgee Wine and Food Month, the Flavours of Mudgee street festival, the Mudgee Wine and Food Festival at Balmoral, and the always-reliable Mudgee Farmers Market (which takes place on the third Saturday of the month).

If you're looking for one of the best croissants on earth stop in at Althea by Zin. Also in the Zin family is Zin House (located at Lowe Family Wines). The restaurant serves biodynamic produce from the on-site kitchen garden and farmland and overlooks the Lowe vineyard and farm.

If you're looking for family activities, take part in a cooking class with the The Little Cooking School – masterclasses serving up gnocchi and dumpling classes for kids? Say no more.

And in the arvo, if you're looking for a palate cleanser, be sure to make time for Mudgee Brewing Co.

When it comes to your cellar door itinerary, we recommend it includes some of the following names: Robert Oatley Vineyards/Craigmoor, Logan Wines, Lowe Family Wine Co, Robert Stein, De Beaurepaire Wines, Vinifera Wines, Bunnamagoo Estate, Ernest Schuetz Estate Wines, Gilbert Family Wines, Walter, Rosby, YEATES, Moothi Estate and First Ridge.

If a weekend escape in Mudgee isn't in your diary just yet, you can still sample the region with the list of wines below. Here are 12 of the best Mudgee wines to try.
