Sweet wines can be made from a variety of different grapes, but riesling examples make up this year's top-rated. Riesling sweet wines achieve intensity of flavour without loss of varietal character and without ultra-sweet cordial flavours. In their different ways, these wines are world class, but still struggle for recognition. James Halliday's best sweet wine of the year is a botrytis riesling from the Geelong region.
James Halliday on his 2021 sweet wine:
2018 Lethbridge Bortytis Riesling TBA
One of the best examples of this style I have tasted. Extraordinarily rich and intense; the acidity not searing as so often is the case, just balancing the sublime concentration of dried and sugar-coated fruit.
