Our Review
Owner and winemaker Wayne Farquhar moved from horticulture to viticulture, acquiring his first vineyard in 1979. His viticultural career was low-key for a number of years, but having tasted wines from all over the world during a decade of business travel, he decided to establish Dell’uva Wines off the back of his existing (conventional) vineyard on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. In short order he established small plots of an A–Z of varieties: aglianico, albarino, ansonica, arinto, barbera, cabernet sauvignon, canaiolo nero, carmenere, carnelian, chardonnay, dolcetto, durif, fiano, freisca, garnacha, graciano, grillo, lagrein, merlot, marsanne, mencia, montepulciano, moscato bianco, mourvèdre, negroamaro, nero d’Avola, pinot blanc, pinot grigio, pinot noir, primitivo, roussanne, sagrantino, sangiovese, saperavi, shiraz, tannat, tempranillo, touriga nacional, verdelho, vermentino, verdicchio and viognier. With only 20ha available, the production of each wine is limited, the vinification as unconventional as the vineyard mix, utilising barrels, ceramic eggs, demijohns and tanks. The winemaking techniques throw maximum attention onto the inherent quality of the varieties, and this story has a long way to run. Exports to China. -JAMES HALLIDAY
