Our Review
Founders Michael and Annabelle Waugh deliberately accumulated a series of old dryland, low-yielding Barossa vineyards back in the ‘70s, aiming to produce wines of unusual depth of flavour and character. They succeeded handsomely in this aim, achieving icon status and stratospheric prices in the US, making the opinions of Australian scribes irrelevant. The Waughs retired in '18 and the business was sold to a group headed by Sydney-based Jimmy Chen. Peter Atyeo stayed on as vineyard manager and winemaker, with Alex Peel (formerly Ross Estate and Yaldara) stepping in as senior winemaker. Older vineyards were remediated, new sites brought into the fold, and winemaking facilities updated. -JAMES HALLIDAY
