Anthony Brain started working life as a chef, but in the late 1990s ‘took a slight bend into the wine industry’. He started gathering experience in the Yarra Valley, and simultaneously started oenology studies at CSU. Margaret River followed, as did time in SA before a return to the Yarra, working at De Bortoli from 2003 to ’07 (undertaking vintages in the Hunter, King and Yarra valleys). Five vintages as winemaker at Bellarine Estate followed, giving him ‘a platform and understanding of the Geelong region and the opportunity to learn more about sites, viticulture and winemaking decisions’. It hasn’t prevented him from foraging far and wide. -JAMES HALLIDAY
