Mike Bennie has already had the chance to taste the latest 2024 vintage, giving it an impressive score of 97.

Every year, Grosset’s G110 riesling scores in the high 90s. And every year, only a limited number bottles are made. These are highly sought-after wines. And the latest 2024 vintage will be no exception once it is released in April this year – as Mike Bennie has already tried it, and given it a score of 97.

In his review, he highlights its “swagger of concentration and chalky texture” while describing it as “somewhat rich, extremely energetic, powerful and so very fresh and long.”

But what goes into making this riesling so special? First off, there's the grapes – “a minuscule quantity of single-clone riesling from the Rockwood Vineyard - now in its sixth vintage – is the source of this very special wine,” shares the team.

This particular clone started out as an experiment. The various clones dotting the Grosset vineyards had been traditionally blended together, but several years ago Jeffrey Grosset’s daughter Georgie suggested fermenting each clone separately – gauging the outcome as standalone wines.

On the Rockwood vineyard, one clone stood out – the G110. Grosset calls it exceptional and Georgie the inspiration.

And because there are so few of these very specific clones on the vineyard, only 150 cases of the Grosset 110 will be available once the 2024 vintage is released in April this year.

Being a biodynamic vineyard and winery is also of significant importance to Grosset Wines. In line with this biodynamic ethos, this vintage was handpicked in the morning on February 25, 2024 (during a full moon) with Jeffrey Grosset overseeing it all.

Lastly, the great length and depth of this riesling can be attributed to extended time on lees – a feature Mike Bennie was greatly taken by.

And for those who don’t yet know about Grosset Wines in the Clare Valley, it is the namesake label of Jeffrey Grosset, who James Halliday describes as the man who "wears the unchallenged mantle of Australia’s foremost riesling maker."

As his latest release of the G110 riesling has garnered an impressive 97 points, it is clear to see how Jeffrey hasn't lost his touch.

the bottle of Grosset G110 riesling - 2024 vintage

There's swagger of concentration and chalky texture. There's a huge volume of green apple, jasmine, lime and lemongrass aromas. The palate is somewhat rich, extremely energetic, powerful and so very fresh and long. Apple, lime and lemongrass are accompanied by a huge swish of river pebble and saline-brine freshness in the minerality department, too. That it all meshes beautifully is another thing to sing from the rooftops. This is a very, very impressive riesling. – Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion, 97 points
