Grosset has just released its 2025 wines, with the Springvale Riesling standing out as its finest – just nudging out the iconic Polish Hill

Many producers like to say that winemaking starts in the vineyard. Jefrrey Grosset thinks we should take it one step further – with it all starting at the point at which you choose where to plant your vineyard in the first place.

When speaking to George recently, he shared, “I’ve always thought that winemaking started not when the grapes are handed from vineyard manager (or grower), to winemaker (at the crusher), and not even simply ‘in the vineyard’ as is often quoted, but at the point of choosing the place and the variety to plant.

“We have planted all four vineyards we make wine from in the Clare Valley. They are all distinctive and specific. Only recently, did I realise that such an attitude or belief is still not universal.”

This is particularly noteworthy now, as Grosset has just released its latest wines – each reflecting their terroir so clearly.

These latest wines include the 2025 vintages of the Grosset Polish Hill, Grosset Springvale Riesling, Grosset Alea Riesling and the Grosset Apiana Fiano. Polish Hill has become an icon in and of itself, however it is the 2025 Springvale Riesling which took the cake this year, with Halliday taster Mike Bennie awarding it 96 points.

Jeffrey puts this success down to time. “We think it is the best in a decade, for the vines are getting older (25 years) and seem to be hitting some slate which has added an extra complexity.”

The team also applies the less is more approach to winemaking here, doing all they can do make their carefully chosen sites speak as loudly as possible. Biodynamic practices are diligently followed, plus great attention is given to handpicking all the fruit.

Jeffrey goes on to say, “An unwavering commitment to wine quality centres on a fundamental principle: plant vines in precisely the right place, nurture them with meticulous care and create memorable wines. This vision has remained unchanged.”
