Last month, Halliday Tasting Team member Dave Brookes visited the Apple Isle to taste wines for the 2027 Halliday Wine Companion (which will be out in August next year!). He reviewed over 200 wines across the week, including those from the Tamar Valley, Pipers River and East Coast, to the Coal River Valley, Derwent Valley and more.
With so many new reviews, it can be hard to know where to begin, so here we've pulled out 18 wines for you to discover now. Rated between 90 and 96 points, the wines represent a snapshot of everything Tassie does well – think sparkling, chardonnay and pinot noir – with a smattering of other varieties to round out the list. Riesling and gamay, anyone?
Priced between $33 and $110, these wines are ready for you to shop now.

Apogee
Deluxe Vintage Brut 2022
Sparkling | TasmaniaPale in the glass with a fine, energetic bead and mousse. Aromas of green apple and citrus fruits alongside hints of crushed shell, clover blossom, freshly baked pastries, shiitake, sea breeze, ozone, flint and stone. It's all about precision and tension on the palate, the fruit propelled forward on a rail of crystalline acidity, gaining velocity before resolving in a gentle fan of citrus, grilled nuts and fresh pastry. It's in wonderful form. -
Highclare Estate

Aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and red apple with hints of tarte Tatin, fresh pastry, stone, sea spray, white flowers and peach melba. Sisu
Riesling 2024
TasmaniaThe first release of the Sisu Riesling slides effortlessly across the palate. Grapefruit, green apple and citrus fruits with just a slink of texture and hints of clover blossom, crushed stone, citrus zest and apple skin. I like the shape of this wine; sleek and tubular with a smooth, porcelain-like acidity propelling things along nicely, the flavour stretching out across its length. Finishes dry and composed. -
Caledon
Sauvignon Blanc 2023
TasmaniaA punchy Coal River Valley sauvignon blanc that sees skins for 12 hours, primary lees for four months and spends another two months on fine lees after racking. All sorts of stuff going on here; it's wild-eyed and nettley with squished gooseberries, struck flint, lantana, citrus and tropical fruits, crushed stone, marzipan and minerals. Ditto on the palate, which shows plenty of texture, stony minerality and a rich, flavoursome passage across the palate. -
Caledon
Chardonnay 2022
TasmaniaPenfolds chardonnay (P58) and 95 clones; 25% into new French oak with wild fermentation, on lees in barrel for nine months with a portion of natural mlf. Flush with white peach, nectarine and citrus characters, with grilled nuts, clotted cream, vanilla bean, cinnamon, white flowers and meal. It all makes for great drinking, with a sleek, mineral driveline and savoury finish. -
Highclare Estate
The Folly Block Pinot Gris 2024
TasmaniaA Tamar Valley pinot gris that shows plenty of texture, clarity and briny focus. Fruit tones of poached pear, lemon and peach with hints of crushed stone, meadow herbs, almond meal, sea spray, a dab of cream and white flowers. It's super fresh and mineral-driven on the palate, with a stony, savoury end point. -
Nocton Vineyard
N1 Chardonnay 2022
TasmaniaPale straw in the glass with aromas of juicy white peach, nectarine and citrus fruit cut with hints of spice, grilled nuts, fresh brioche, apple turnover, white flowers and stone. There's a balance between richness and savoury restraint here, with a creamy oak influence and nicely poised stone and citrus fruits. The flavours draw out nicely across the wine's length. -
Sisu
Chardonnay 2024
TasmaniaThe inaugural release of the Sisu Chardonnay from the impressive fledgling winery located in Campania in the Coal River Valley. Succulent peach, nectarine and citrus fruits with hints of soft spice, clotted cream, grilled nuts, nutmeg, washed rind cheese and stone. There's a creamy expansiveness to the palate shape, drawn into line by fine, chalky acidity with a plume of spice, ripe stone fruits and dreamy oak as the wine trails away. Finishes savoury and dry.

Alto Pinot Noir 2024
TasmaniaDeep ruby in the glass with aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry and plum fruits cut with hints of game, sous bois, spice, shoyu, mushroom terrine, purple flowers and crushed rock. There's an appealing earthiness that underlies the fruit on the palate, a fine-boned minerality that drives the wine forward. Finishes with a composed flourish of chalk, spice and pure cherry and raspberry tones. -
Caledon
Pinot Noir 2023
TasmaniaCoal River Valley pinot noir; three different clones grown on black cracking soil on jurassic dolerite. Deep ruby with bright cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant fruits cut with hints of mixed spice, a tendril of struck flint, turned leaves, cocoa nibs, roast mushrooms and earth. That fruit rides a fine rail across the palate, scooting along with impressive velocity and mineral verve. -
Caledon
Reserve Pinot Noir 2022
TasmaniaDeep ruby in the glass with aromas of ripe cherry, red plum and pippy raspberry. Hints of spicy oak, cherry clafoutis, undergrowth, dried game meats, rosehip and turned earth. Silky in the mouth, with a fine slide of ripe fruit, lacy, sapid acidity and a long, slender peacock's tail of spice and red fruits. -
Frogmore Creek
Pinot Noir 2024
TasmaniaBright magenta/crimson with aromas of juicy dark cherry, blood plum and forest berry fruits cut with hints of spice, charcuterie, mushroom terrine, wildflowers, leaf litter and earth. These aromas transpose over onto the palate, which shows a savoury, powdered-rock tannin profile, leaning savoury and spicy as it trails away. -
Highclare Estate
The People's Share Pinot Noir 2024
TasmaniaDeep ruby in the glass with aromas of wild strawberry, plum and red cherry along with dark spice, game meats, a whiff of struck-flint reduction, crushed herbs, turned leaf litter and pomegranate juice. Ripe plum and strawberry fruits with some nice crunch to the acidity and powdery tannins. There's plenty of pinot flavour on display here. -
Sisu
Pinot Noir 2024
TasmaniaThe first release of the Sisu Pinot Noir from the nascent Coal River Valley producer is an impressive one. It's bright and energetic, with a swell of ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruits undercut with hints of spice, crushed rock, crushed herbs, pomegranate and an underlying regional coal dust/earthiness that presents in many wines from this end of the valley. Fine-boned acidity provides cadence and verve and there is plenty of energy and pinosity on display. Gentle, chalky tannins provide ample support. -
Tamar Ridge
Reserve Pinot Noir 2024
TasmaniaA selection of the best parcels from the Tamar Ridge Kayena vineyard. Mid-ruby with finely honed red and dark cherry fruits with hints of red plum, raspberry, exotic spice, wet earth, some light reduction, judicious nutty oak, purple flowers and undergrowth.
