Ruane Winery

Marilyn and John Baxter purchased their 32ha property over 30 years ago, when it was a bare block. The primary purpose was the establishment of a thoroughbred racehorse stud, and it has enjoyed outstanding success, with yearlings sold to the US, South Africa, NZ and the UK (as well as Australia). In 2000 they decided to plant a vineyard on a spare paddock, building on their pre-existing love of wine. They sourced sangiovese, pinot gris and chardonnay from Yalumba, and successfully established the vineyard with appropriate consultancy advice. Extensive rose gardens add to the beauty of the block, named in honour of John's mother (or, to be precise, her maiden name) who at the age of 95 still welcomes visitors on the third Sunday of each month. -JAMES HALLIDAY
