Our Review
The Poonawatta story is complex, stemming from 0.8ha of shiraz planted in 1880. When Andrew Holt’s parents purchased the Poonawatta property, the vineyard had suffered decades of neglect and the slow process of restoration began. While that was underway, the strongest canes available from the winter pruning of the block were slowly and progressively dug into the stony soil, establishing the Cuttings Block over seven years, and the yield is even lower than that of the 1880 Block. The riesling is produced from a separate vineyard planted by the Holts in the '70s. Grenache was planted in '19. Exports to France, the US, Canada, Malaysia, China and Denmark. -JAMES HALLIDAY

Information
The Poonawatta cellar door offers a place to soak up Eden Valley’s unique beauty, to enjoy tales of history and characters, with views overlooking the dam surrounded by ancient river gums. Various experiences are offered, including three tasting flights and a series of bookable tastings. Artisan cheese plates and gourmet platters are also available to pair with wines. Wine lovers can also choose to enjoy Poonawatta’s picnic spot, nestled amongst the ancient river gums. Poonawatta is located on Eden Valley Road, 3 minutes from the Eden Valley township, 10 minutes from Angaston and 15 minutes from Tanunda.
