Mitolo had a meteoric rise once Frank Mitolo decided to turn a winemaking hobby into a business. In 2000 he took the plunge into the commercial end of the business, inviting Ben Glaetzer to make the wines. Split between the Jester range and single-vineyard wines, Mitolo began life as a red wine–dominant brand but now produces a range of varietals. In November ’17 Mitolo opened their $3 million tasting room, restaurant and event space with a flourish. Exports to all major markets. -JAMES HALLIDAY


Hailing from Italy’s Abruzzo region, the Mitolo family migrated to Australia in the 1950s with a hardworking ethos and a strong connection to the land. Embodying the motto of Abruzzo – forte e gentile or strong and gentle – Mitolo’s proud Italian Australian heritage remains deeply engrained in the range, striving to make remarkable wines full of character and elegance.
In 2000, Mitolo made its first Shiraz, and two years later its first Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that time, Mitolo has championed these two varieties with fruit from some of McLaren Vale’s finest vineyards. Whilst building its reputation for premium Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon offerings, the range was expanded to include several Italian varieties paying homage to the family’s roots.
