Our Review
Timo Mayer teamed with partner Rhonda Ferguson to establish Mayer on the slopes of Mount Toolebewong, 8km south of Healesville. The steepness of those slopes is presumably ‘celebrated’ in the name given to the vineyard (Bloody Hill). Pinot noir has the lion’s share of the high-density vineyard, with smaller amounts of shiraz and chardonnay. Mayer’s winemaking credo is 100% whole bunches (with a focus on syrah, cabernet, gamay, merlot, nebbiolo, sangiovese and tempranillo), minimal interference and handling; all wines are all unfined and unfiltered. -JAMES HALLIDAY
