St Huberts

Victoria | Yarra Valley

Our Review

The St Huberts of today has a rich 19th-century history, not least in its success at the 1881 Melbourne International Exhibition, which featured every type of agricultural and industrial product. The wine section alone attracted 711 entries. The Emperor of Germany offered a Grand Prize, a silver gilt epergne, for the most meritorious exhibit in the show. A St Huberts wine won the wine section, then competed against objects as diverse as felt hats and steam engines to win the Emperor’s Prize, featured on its label for decades thereafter. Like other Yarra Valley wineries, it dropped from sight at the start of the 20th century, was reborn in 1966 and, after several changes of ownership, became part of what today is TWE. The wines are made at Coldstream Hills but have their own, very different, focus. -JAMES HALLIDAY
