Plan your trip to the stunning and secluded Margaret River – home to some of Australia’s best cellar doors.

Ocean-side and historic Margaret River is considered to be one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. Positioned in the south-west corner of Australia, it stretches 100 kilometres from north to south and is renowned for its isolation, ancient terrain and remarkable coastline. In addition to its obvious physical attractions of natural beauty, great surf and beaches, the region is also home to one of the highest concentrations of premium wine producers in the country.

From chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon to experimental styles and alternate varieties, this wine-lover's haven has something for every palate. A visit to one of the many five-star Halliday rated wineries located in the region will feature intimate, specialised wine tastings and delicious local produce – or follow your visit with a long lunch at one of Margaret River’s acclaimed restaurants. Plan your trip to include the following four standout cellar doors, known for their highly rated and regionally expressive wines.

  • Cullen Wines

  • A pioneer of Margaret River, Cullen is renowned for producing long-lived wines of highly individual style and this year celebrates 50 years since its first plantings in the region. The cellar door features the Cullen Biodynamic Tasting Room, with soaring ceilings, slate flooring, natural timber and huge north-facing windows with a view of the vineyards.

Guests can taste the winery’s award-winning biodynamic wines at a timber tasting bench – or enjoy a seated tasting of current and museum release wines, followed by a sumptuous lunch. The cellar door menu has recently been streamlined to reflect the brand’s carbon positive status, with over 90% of the produce is grown own site. Try the Biodynamic Tasting Plate, which showcases estate-grown fruit and vegetables, plus other local delights.

Winemaker Vanya Cullen says: "We welcome you to visit Cullen for a globally unique tasting experience in our Biodynamic Wine Room. Our award-winning wines are 100% Wilyabrup-made, certified biodynamic and carbon-positive – made sustainably with integrity and quality since 1971, 50 years in the making."

  • Vasse Felix

  • Established in 1967, Vasse Felix is Margaret River's founding wine estate. Its pristine and isolated location, ancient soils and twin oceans have seen the winery adopt organic principles across its four vineyards, building upon a reputation for minimal intervention and ‘small batch’ winemaking. With a particular focus on cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, the renowned estate offers a range of immersive experiences in Margaret River’s wine, food, culture and history.

Curate your Vasse Felix Estate visit with options such as a seated tasting at the cellar door, wine and charcuterie in the Wine Lounge, a long lunch in The Restaurant or an exploration of history and culture in The Art Gallery and The Vault. For the ultimate destination experience, go beyond the cellar door with a specialised tour experience

Winemaker Virginia Willcock says: "2021 marks the 50th vintage at the Vasse Felix winery. Sample a living capsule of this incredible history with the highly awarded 2017 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon – available for tasting or purchase at the cellar door."

  • Victory Point

  • Venture down roads less travelled to Victory Point, located just a few kilometres outside the small township of Cowaramup. Down a dusty dirt road, flanked by rolling hills and dairy farms, is the winery cellar door, overlooking stunning vineyard views. The dry-grown vineyard has never been irrigated, resulting in strong vines that produce fruit of exceptional quality.

Upon arrival at the cellar door, meet owners Gary and Judith Berson who will take you through a guided tasting of the Victory Point range. The winery’s flagship varieties include chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon – as well as cabernet franc, pinot noir, cabernet malbec and a dry rosé.

Owners Judith and Gary Berson say:"After a trip to the winery, round out the day with a long lunch at Chow’s Table or Studio Bistro – or plan a dinner at the inimitable Miki’s in Margaret River."

  • Domaine Naturaliste

  • The Domaine Naturaliste Cellar Door sits in the heart of the highly acclaimed Wilyabrup area of the Margaret River region. The rustic steel and timber building is nestled among a 21-hectare vineyard of 20-year-old vines. Located seven kilometers inland from the moderating Indian Ocean, the winery produces a range of fragrant, textured and balanced wines to experience in a relaxed environment.

Domaine Naturaliste specialises in seated flights of six luxury wines, so you can experience the wines among the vines. The flights are presented on local Mari wood benches and can be accompanied by made-to-order charcuterie and cheese boards. Check out the Domaine Naturaliste website before your visit as the winery often has live music in the afternoons.

Winemaker Bruce Dukes says: "Plan your Margaret River trip to meet the stingrays at Hamelin Bay, wander the Boranup forest, discover rare native orchids and then watch the sun set over Canal Rocks in Yallingup."
